bedside tables

First of all, if you read my blog primarily to see pictures of Rosie, here she is:

Now you can skip the rest of this.

This week at the Upland Library, I saw a shelf of free books. I was ecstatic. It was exactly what I had been looking for.

It wasn't that I wanted to read Matthias, the story of the apostle who replaced Judas Iscariot, and who fell in love with Miriam. "As if she were a boy, she had been educated by a rabbi kinsman. Her knowledge of the law and her keen mind hold an overwhelming attraction for Matthias, but her strong will and independent ways almost destroy him. Miriam believes that Jesus is a dangerous rebel who will only lead Matthias to his death...Will Miriam, in the end, believe in Jesus?" How can I bear to live without knowing the answer to that question?!

I was intrigued by Summer Camp Nurse, sure.

And by The Spare Room, where the main character is "a cheerful squarerigger of a woman...practical as oatmeal."

Or how about The Guest of Honor - "the story of an American president who falls in love with the widowed president of another country."

No, I didn't want to read any of these gems. I wanted free bedside tables. Free but for the cost of glue, that is.

We did rescue two books from this dire fate: Breathing Tokens by Carl Sandburg and The Nine Tailors by Dorothy Sayers. Yes, I guess I feel I have that kind of power, to say whether books have the right to live or die.

Now, does anyone have an idea for re-using all the plastic book jackets we removed from these books?

"practical as oatmeal". That's hilarious.

I really like these! I've been needing a bedside table, maybe I will steal this idea.

Also, if the dust jackets are plastic, I wonder if you could use them for something like this?

It seems like a lot of people make things out of fusing plastic bags together....maybe plastic dust jackets would work as well.

Also, some guy uses them to wrap presents:

THis is an awesome idea! Can I borrow it? I've been looking unsuccessfully for two years for affordable yet perfect side tables for the living room and since book clutter is the best clutter, these would be great!

Congratulations on the little boy! I am so excited for you!

Guys, feel free to "steal" the idea. It's not original to me. You can google it.

One point of advice: they are not 100% sturdy. I think slightly shorter, like a side table next to a sofa, would be sturdier, but you also might want to consider making two legs of book stacks.

I thought you were going to ask in anyone had moral objections...

No. I wasn't going to ask.

Why ask when you know the answer?
