Last night Jenn and I threw a baby shower for Hannah and her soon-arriving baby boy. I started making homemade bath salts about a month ago, and so I decided to make a batch as party favors for our guests.
Preparation
1. Collect old baby food jars from friends. Wash and dry.
2. Soak the jars and lids in very hot water and 409 (not sure if the 409 is necessary or the best loosening agent, but it's what I had in the basement and it worked for me) for about 15 minutes or until the labels begin to fall off.
*Hint! If you have multiple brands and sizes of baby food jars, work in batches so that you don't have to waste time trying to re-match the lids with the correct jars. I did not do this:-))
3. Use a sturdy putty knife to scrape any remaining bits of glue off the sides of the jars. Allow them to air dry.
4. Place the lids on newspaper and spray paint silver. Repeat after one hour if needed.
Bath Salts
The proportions here are not a hard and fast rule. Many recipes suggest a 1:1 ratio of the epsom and sea salts. Some recipes also include baking soda or glycerin as a skin softener.
Combine
6 cups epsom salts
2 cups dead sea salt
1 cup ground oats (softens and soothes skin)
essential oil (I used lavender on on batch, and jasmine on another)
food coloring, if desired
Stir until thoroughly combined and fragrant.
Presentation
1. Use a funnel to fill each jar.
2. Create tags, if desired.
3. Use ribbon or twine to attach tags to jars.
A small baby food jar is enough for one bath, and a large jar for two baths.
Ta-Da!
