This was a book that Mom left here many months ago after reading it on the plane from Arkansas to Seattle. To be honest, I didn't find the cover art, the back cover summary or commendations very intriguing. They didn't make me want to read this "New York Times Bestseller and Amazing True Story"..."Gritty with pain and betrayal and brutality, it also shines with an unexpected, life-changing love". (Is this a book or a Hallmark movie, people? The back cover is like a road sign reading "Warning: Heart Warming Cliches Ahead.")
But a couple of girls in my book group had read it too, and enjoyed it, and none of my requested books had arrived from the library, so I decided to give it a try.
I was again turned off by the first several chapters. The voices didn't sound authentic. No one speaks with that much imagery, metaphor, and simile "all run up right next to each other like patches on a quilt".
But maybe they do. In any case, I kept reading, and by 2/3 of the way through I was crying. It was a good story.
