christmas album

we decided to make one. since we are both teachers, we'll both have a christmas break and some free time. we are six or seven songs into it already. it will be half original songs, half covers.

here are my three original song lyrics:

Queen of Heaven (inspired by art from my long-ago semester in Italy)

Hail Mary

Full of grace
Full of grace

not the painting tourists buy
Those placid eyes
That flaccid guise
That never cries

doesn’t fit in museum space
A round white face
With halo-ed gaze
And unamazed

not a sterile castle queen
She isn’t clean
No satin sheen
No royal gleam

A mother’s scream

Humble, poor, in pain she swore
The shame she bore
The veil was torn
Her heart was born

So let it be
Make space in me
For David’s seed
The ancient tree

Full of grace
Full of grace

So let it be
Make space in me
For David’s seed
The ancient tree

Full of grace
Full of grace
Full of grace
Full of grace

Sleep, laugh, eat (lullaby for the Christ child)

Sleep, precious baby
So I too can sleep
A little shut eye
For beddie bye
Time for night night

Or if you can't sleep,
Teach me to be
Rested in Thee

Laugh, silly baby
and I'll play along
Hearts filled with song
Nothing goes wrong
and play makes us strong

Or if you won't laugh
Remind me that my
World's not yet right.

Eat, hungry baby
so healthy you'll grow
you'll never know
how it feels to go
hungry alone

Or if you won't eat
Teach me to be
Made full by Thee

Sleep, precious baby
So I too can sleep
A little shut eye
For beddie bye
Time for night night

Jesus, C'mon (A song for advent)(or, "Come Thou Long Expected Jesus")

My back aches
and I can't wait
To see your face
Jesus, c'mon

You're overdue
My belly's huge
So please come soon
Jesus, c'mon

Kick Roman ass
and raise our flag
we're good, they're bad
Jesus, c'mon

Bless our war
So we'll kill more
and won't be poor
Jesus, c'mon

My best life now
A bigger house
You're my cash cow
Jesus, c'mon

Expand my land
I know you can
and bless my plans
Jesus, c'mon

I can't wait
for Christmas Day
for you to come

I've been real good
It's understood
You'll come and bring my Christmas dream

I can't wait
for Christmas Day
for you to come

I've been real good
It's understood
You'll come and bring my Christmas dream

I can't wait
for Christmas Day
more gifts for me...

I love the first one!

Ummm. Do you actually sing the last one? But what a fun idea to mix covers with originals. I'm with Ramon on Hail Mary. Especially the refrain "so let it be" etc. That's lovely. So I guess the Marian art impressed you as missing the point in some respects...?

Have you heard Mary Chapin Carpenter's Come Darkness Come Light yet? I think you'd like it.
