I realized, recently, why I like lesson planning. For one thing, it's a solitary activity, and I like being alone for large chunks of time. It's also a self-directed activity; I can apportion my time in whatever way seems best to me.
But more than that, it's a lot like research. You take a subject, and you figure out how best to approach it - how to take it apart and put it back together in a way that makes sense - so that kids can learn it. You use a bunch of different sources and pull out bits and pieces to make a better, comprehensive whole.
It's like a puzzle. It's like doing the research for your senior thesis, everyday. And that's the part I always loved the most anyway.
